Electrocardiogram (ECG)

The non-invasive ECG test helps a doctor evaluate arrhythmias, chest pain, and structural heart problems as well as other heart conditions. This test is performed by placing a total of 12 electrotes (sticky pads) on the surface of the patient’s chest, arms and legs. This gives us the ability to take an electrical “snapshot” of the heart which can help us diagnose a multiplicity of heart problems.

There are three forms of an ECG test:

  • Resting ECG
  • ECG stress test
  • Ambulatory ECG

Electrical signals from your heart are transmitted from electrodes placed on your chest to a machine that creates a graph of its rhythm and rate. With a resting ECG, patients lie on a table and during an ECG stress test, patients walk on a treadmill at varying speeds and elevations. Ambulatory ECG’s are completed using a portable monitoring system worn by a patient.
